Taking Refuge

Taking refuge is the beginning of faith, understanding, practice, and realization. It starts with having faith and delighting in the Dharma, then progressing to understanding the Dharma and relying on it to engage in actual practice. Finally, it leads to the attainment of realization and its fruits. With faith comes joy, as the essence of faith naturally manifests as a state of happiness. Joyfully taking refuge in Holy Guru Lian Sheng.

The meaning of taking refuge is to turn towards, rely on, and be saved. In Vajrayana Buddhism, the Four Refuges are “Taking refuge in the Vajra Guru, taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, taking refuge in all the holy ones of the ten directions.” The Vajra Guru is placed first because they hold the embodiment of the Three Jewels. By taking refuge in the Vajra Guru, sentient beings have the opportunity to learn the esoteric teachings and receive the salvation of the Three Jewels through the Guru’s blessings.

Through the merits of taking refuge, one accumulates the causes of happiness and increases their wholesome roots and virtues. Those who take refuge receive blessings, transform delusion into awakening, enhance their merits and wisdom, purify body, speech, and mind, and transcend the ocean of birth and death, ultimately attaining the fruition of enlightenment.

The methods of taking refuge

To take refuge, it is suggested to contact and arrange a time to visit the “True Buddha Temple” in Seattle, USA, or any other location where Grand Master, Sheng Yen Lu is conducting Dharma propagation, in order to receive personal refuge initiation directly from Grand Master, Sheng Yen Lu.

Note: Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple holds group practice sessions every Saturday at 8 PM, where Grand Master, Sheng Yen Lu personally bestows refuge initiation. If you wish to take refuge, please inform the temple staff in the main hall and fill out a refuge application form in advance.
For disciples who are unable to personally come for refuge initiation from various corners of the world, there is an alternative method available. On the morning of the first or fifteenth day of the lunar month at 7 AM, face the direction of the rising sun, join your palms together, and reverently recite the Four Refuges Mantra: “Namah Guruve. Namah Buddhaya. Namah Dharmaya. Namah Sanghaya. Lian Sheng Buddha is guiding. I take refuge in the True Buddha.” Recite this mantra three times, followed by three prostrations (once is sufficient). Disciples who perform this ritual at home only need to write a letter, including their true “name,” “address,” and “age.” Optionally, include a small offering for the Buddha. In the letter, clearly state the request for refuge initiation. Send the letter to the “True Buddha Temple” in the United States. At the temple, on every first and fifteenth day of the lunar month, a remote initiation ceremony called “Distant Empowerment” is conducted for disciples who are unable to be physically present. Following the ceremony, disciples will receive a “Certificate of Refuge” and the teacher’s image, along with instructions on how to proceed with practice according to the specific teachings. This is how the transmission of the “Grand Master, Sheng Yen Lu” lineage is obtained.

Note: Ling Shen Ching Tze Temple provides an online refuge initiation method. Disciples who perform the ritual at home can click on the small icon for the “Refuge Application Form,” enter the relevant information, optionally offer a donation for the Buddha, and then click on the “Submit” icon to complete the process.
